Abstract

The Morey Wetland Mitigation Tract is located just south of Lester in Mitchell County, Georgia. The proposed wetland/stream mitigation site is approximately 817.713 acres in size and is located south of SR 112. Possible restoration activities may include backfilling of drainage ditches, removal of old roadbeds, leveling of silviculture bedding rows, and replanting of hardwood tree saplings. This reevaluation was concerned with the survey of two small areas not covered by the original archaeological survey by Brockington and Associates, Inc. in 2002. The additional surveyed area totaled approximately 12 acres. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.
