Abstract

New South Associates, on behalf of Dial Cordy Associates, conducted a Phase I Archaeological Survey at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Glynn County, Georgia. The Contract (No. W912HN-05-D-0014, W.O. 0024) was administered through the Savannah District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The area of potential effect (APE) consists of a 40-acre parcel proposed for acquisition (Figure 1) that is predominantly wooded. Project objectives included research of archaeological documents, completion of a Phase I survey, analysis of any recovered artifacts, and the assessment of the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility for each identified archaeological site. Archaeological research and survey was conducted during July of 2006. R. Jeannine Windham, RPA served as the Project Archaeologist, and completed research and survey of the FLETC area. Natalie Adams, RPA guided investigations as the Principle Investigator. Josh Blackmon assisted in completion of the field investigations. The survey complied with the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended (PL 89-665); the Archaeological and Historic Preservation Act, as amended (PL 93-291); and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation revised 36 CFR Part 800 Regulations. New South Associates' work was also conducted in compliance with the Georgia Council of Professional Archaeologists (GCPA) standards for conducting archaeological surveys in Georgia. In addition, this report of investigations is compiled in accordance with the Georgia State Historic Preservation Office, Archaeological Services Unit's Archaeological Assessment Report Guidelines and Components (1993). Materials used to document the archaeological investigations included field notes, photographs, artifacts, and other documents. These items will be ' curated at the appropriate facility. All materials will be prepared for curation following the Federal Curation Standards under 36CFR79. No cultural resources were identified during this archaeological investigation. Therefore, this report presents brief environmental and cultural background discussions, investigation methods, and observations of field conditions in the study area. Environmental data is presented in Section II and provides an overview of the natural setting in and around the project locale. Section III discusses cultural context and findings in the vicinity of the project area. Field methods used during the current survey are presented in Section IV. Results and recommendations are presented in the final section of this report.
