Abstract

New South Associates has completed a Phase I Archaeological Survey of the proposed Eisenhower Parkway Extension, Alternative H. The survey was conduced in Bibb County, Georgia in June 2006 and is an addendum to the original survey conduced by Loubser in 2005 on the Eisenhower Parkway Extension Northern Avoidance and MLK Alternatives (Loubser 2005). The proposed corridor begins at a point along Interstate 16 (I-16) and extends for approximately one and three tenths of a mile to end at a point on Ocmulgee East Boulevard (Cochran Short Route). The proposed corridor is 75 meters (246 ft) at its maximum width and 56 meters (183 ft) at its minimum width. Two transects were traversed over the proposed corridor route and transects and shovel tests were spaced at a 30 meter interval. The proposed Alternate H route crosses a comparatively small section of the Ocmulgee Old Fields Traditional Cultural Property (TCP), from the I-16 to a borrow pit. During the investigations, two isolated finds were located and shovel tested. The isolated finds were two prehistoric flakes and one fragment of clear glass. None of the locations where the isolated finds were recovered contained additional archaeological material and accordingly were not recorded as archaeological sites. Considering their ephemeral nature, these isolated finds are recommended as not eligible for the NRHP. Knowing that no intact archaeological sites or artifacts were located within the TCP, no additional archaeological investigations are recommended within the proposed Alternative H Right-of-Way.
