Abstract

New South Associates conducted a Phase I Archaeological Survey of Powder Springs Road and Callaway Road/Cheatham Hill Road [GDOT Project No.: STP-0004-00(449) P.I. No. 04449] on April 20, 2007 (Figure 1). The survey area included an expanded right-ofway (ROW) of 100 to 108 feet along Powder'Springs Road and 60 feet to between 80 and 120 feet along Callaway Road/Cheatham Hill Road. The corridor extends approximately 1,850 feet along Callaway Road/Cheatham Road, and approximately 1,800 feet along Powder Springs Road. The area of potential effect (APE) was examined by a systematic pedestrian survey that included the examination of all exposed surfaces and the investigation of shovel test pit locations at a 100-foot interval along both sides of each roadway. No artifacts were identified as a result of the survey. No further archaeological investigation is recommended for the corridor as it is currently proposed. However, should the project's scope of impact change to include additional ROW, archaeological survey is recommended for the new APE.
