Abstract

Archaeological Survey of Project CSMLP-0008-00(370), Houston County, HP# 070626-002. In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project CSMLP-0008-00(370), Houston County has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP)". The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect. The proposed project would consist of the widening of SR 11/US 41 from Sandy Run Creek (MP 23.33) to White Road (MP 25.01) in Houston County. The existing roadway is comprised of two variable width (11.5 feet to 12 feet) travel lanes with grass shoulders that vary between two feet and six feet in width. The existing right-of-way varies from 60 feet to 80 feet, except at Watson Boulevard where it varies from 100 feet to 160 feet. The proposed roadway would consist of four 12-foot travel lanes with a 12-foot center lane and 10-foot shoulders that include curb/gutter and sidewalks. The proposed right-of-way varies between 105 feet and 120 feet. The proposed project is 1.68 miles in length. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. By agreement, because no archaeological resources were located within the project's area of potential effect, no signed concurrence from the State Historic Preservation Office is required. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
