Abstract

The Georgia Transmission Corporation is proposing to construct about 3.94 km (2.45 miles) of transmission line along Rockbridge Road in suburbanized southern Gwinnett County. In compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, they commissioned an archeological survey of the tract that had the goal of locating and assessing the significance of, in terms of eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places, all archeological sites in the project area. Archival research and field survey were conducted in June of 2007. Archival research showed that no known sites are recorded in or close to the project corridor. The field survey confirmed impressions from the aerial photographic project maps that the project area is very heavily developed. Only a few hundred feet of corridor was undeveloped. Survey was conducted by visually inspecting the entire corridor and excavating eight shovel tests in the undeveloped portions. No archeological sites or resources were discovered. Thus, in regard to archeological resources, we recommend that the project be given clearance to proceed.
