Abstract

An intensive Phase I archaeological assessment survey was recently conducted by PBS&J of the proposed Broxton (U.S. 441) Bypass, including Alabama Street/Railroad Street two-way pairs, located in Coffee County, Georgia. A systematic subsurface inspection of the proposed U.S. 441 Bypass project area was conducted primarily at 30-meter intervals along two parallel transects, and a thorough visual inspection of exposed surfaces was conducted. Two archaeological sites were identified within the project area. The National Register status of both sites is considered to be unknown, with the portions inside the APE being noncontributing. Broxton City Cemetery lies within the APE, but this undertaking will not have an adverse effect on it. This report contains a detailed discussion of the prehistory and history of the project area, a discussion of methods employed, detailed discussions of the identified sites, including an evaluation of their National Register eligibility, and recommendations concerning the effect of the proposed project on these sites.
