Abstract

During the period May 12-May 21, 2008, Edwards-Pitman Environmental Inc. (EPEI) conducted an archaeological survey of the proposed Clark Avenue Extension improvements project in Dougherty County, Georgia. The proposed project would consist of improvements to West Society Avenue and Clark Avenue, from Jefferson Street to State Route (SR) 3 (Liberty Expressway). The project would include construction of a new bridge spanning the Flint River. The length of the project corridor is 2.65 miles. The project was conducted under a contract with PBS&J. Research at the Georgia Archaeological Site Files (GASF) in Athens indicated that two previously recorded archaeological sites are located in the current project Area of Potential Effect (APE). These locations were revisited during the present study. The survey of the project corridor resulted in the identification of two previously unrecorded archaeological sites. Based on the survey findings, the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility of two sites is unknown. The sections of these sites in the APE would not contribute to their eligibility. Based on the results of EPEI's survey in the APE, two prehistoric sites are recommended potentially eligible for the NRHP. No further archaeological work is recommended in the project's APE. Clearance to proceed with the proposed undertaking in these areas is recommended. At two archaeological sites, EPEI recommends Phase II archeological testing to clarify the NRHP eligibility of these sites in the APE.
