Abstract

During July of 2008, an intensive cultural resource assessment survey was conducted by Bland and Associates, Inc. (BAI) of the 16.57 acre, Brant Creek property in Camden County, Georgia. This project was undertaken to comply with federal (Department of Army Nationwide Permit File No. 200502261) and Georgia state (DRI No. 1795) regulations regarding the identification and management of historic properties that might occur within the project tract. The goal of this project is to build a residential apartment complex (the Bryant Creek Apartment Community and Clubhouse) along Georgia State Highway 40. The taxpayer identification number (TPIN) for the parcel under investigation is 135-002. This project was undertaken at the request of Brant Creek, LLC. The goals of this project were to locate, identify, delineate, and evaluate cultural resources within the tract. This project tract was found to have been extensively modified through earth moving with heavy equipment in the 20th century for use as a silvicultural area. The project tract, which consists of approximately 4.33 acres of wetlands and 12.24 acres of uplands, contained no structures or previously recorded cultural resources. Fieldwork for the current project entailed intensive shovel testing of the project tract (n=85), as well as surface inspection; no cultural material was encountered during shovel testing or surface inspection. Modem, roadside refuse and various other discarded items were the only cultural material noted in the parcel. In summary, no archaeological sites, historic structures, or isolated finds were encountered within the project tract during fieldwork. Based on these results, no further archaeological investigation or preservation is warranted within the current project area. It is recommended that the proposed project be authorized to proceed as planned without further concern for impacts to cultural resources.
