Abstract

The proposed project is the identification of surplus property owned by the Georgia Department of Transportation that will be placed on the market by the Department's Right-of-Way Office. The surplus property is located south of Satellite Boulevard and west of 1-85 in Gwinnett County, Georgia (see attached location map). The parcel is approximately 2.39 acres. The area was surveyed during a Phase I archaeological survey of various interchanges and improvements to 1-85 in 1993 by New South Associates, Inc. The State Historic Preservation Officers concurred with the finding that no archaeological resources were found within the project area on June 9, 1993. The archaeological survey was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. By agreement, since no archaeological resources were located within the project's area of potential effect, no signed concurrence form the State Historic Preservation Officer is required. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
