Abstract

The proposed project would consist of the construction of a new roadway and bridge over the Oconee River north of the city of Dublin in Laurens County. County Road 454/Country Club Road (MP 3.46) would be extended along CR 732Blackshear Ferry Road to CR 8/Ben Hall Lake Drive (MP 0.93). A portion of the proposed project would extend on new location to the northeast of the Oconee River. The proposed roadway would consist of one 12-ft. travel lane in each direction with 10-ft. rural shoulders. Existing rightof-way varies between 40-ft. to 80-ft. Proposed right-of-way would vary between 145-ft. to 280-ft. Permanent easements would also be required for the construction and maintenance of slopes. The total project length would be 2.3330 miles. An archeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. By agreement, since no archaeological resources were located within the project's area of potential effect, no signed concurrence form the State Historic Preservation Officer is required. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
