Abstract

The proposed project originally consisted of intersection improvements at State Route 57 and State Route 18 including the realignment and correction of substandard curves on the south, east and west approaches. Approximately 100-200' of right-of-way was required. The project was originally surveyed and cleared for archaeology on July 31, 2002 by Paul McIntosh. Since that time the proposed project design has changed and now consists of the intersection improvement on State Route 18 at State Route 57 by the construction of a round-a-bout. The project will begin at Milepost 1.88 on State Route 57 and end at Milepost 2.03 on State Route 57. The typical section for both State Route 57 and State Route 18 shall consist of one 12' travel lane in each direction with 10' rural shoulders. Auxiliary lanes will be provided on State Route 57 onto State Route 18 from both directions. Traffic will be maintained on the existing alignment during construction. Both the existing and required right-of-way are of a variable width throughout the project. An archeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archeologists in consultation with' DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. By agreement, since no archaeological resources were located within the project's area of potential effect, no signed concurrence form the State Historic Preservation Officer is required. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
