Abstract

The proposed project would replace the structurally deficient bridge on CR 143/County Line Road over Polecat Creek in Gordon/Murray Counties. The existing bridge would be replaced with a 80' x 28' structure approximately 100 feet south of the current alignment. The project would begin approximately 1400 feet west of the current bridge and end approximately 500 feet east. Existing right-of-way is approximately 40 feet and required right-of-way would vary up to a maximum of 125 feet. This reevaluation was concerned with the addition of a temporary easement east of the bridge and adjacent to the project corridor. The easement is 0.58 acres in size and is needed to drain a pond. An archaeological survey was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. By agreement, because no archaeological resources were located within the project's area of potential effect, no signed concurrence from the State Historic Preservation Office is required. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
