Abstract

A phase I archaeological survey and limited testing was conducted on the grounds of the Jesup Railroad depot in Jesup, Wayne County in anticipation of the rehabilitation of the depot. This project was conducted on behalf of Bron Cleveland Associates, Inc. that plans to repave the parking lot, restore the exterior of the depot, repair and restore the interior and facilities destroyed by fire in 2003, and re-roof the existing roof. The project area is located in downtown Jesup along NW Broad Street between East Cherry Street and West Walnut Street adjacent to the Chamber of Commerce. The railroad tracks form the southeastern boundary of the rectangular tract measuring approximately 0.25ha. (0.6 acres). The elevation of the project area is 30.5m. (100ft.). Cypress Cultural Consultants identified cultural material on the most of the tract. The entire tract was recorded as a mid-Nineteenth Century artifact scatter and train depot. A single feature was identified on the northeast end of the tract and was tested by the excavation of a one meter square test unit. Artifacts from the feature, and the site as a whole, appear to have limited research potential and is, therefore, ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places. Cypress Cultural Consultants recommends that the renovation project be allowed to proceed as planned.
