On December 10 to 14, 2007 and February 9, 2008, URS Corporation undertook Phase II limited testing of a Middle and Late Woodland site identified during the Phase I survey for the proposed bridge replacement on SR 92 over the Flint River in Fayette and Spalding Counties, Georgia. As a result of testing, three additional cultural components were identified at the the site: Early Archaic, Late Archaic, and Early Woodland. While the site exhibits considerable time depth as represented by the components identified and is in a good state of preservation, the modest artifact density and the absence of cultural features suggests that the site may have limited research potential. However, it cannot be determined for certain with the current dataset whether or not further investigations would reveal anything more substantial than what has already been determined thus far. Under the circumstances, eligibility for the portion of the site falling within the current area of potential effect (APE) is considered unknown. Further testing is recommended. In addition to the testing, another site was revisited at the request of the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). Additional shovel testing was undertaken in order to ensure that the Phase I findings were sound. Eight additional shovel tests excavated at the site demonstrated that the conclusions of the Phase I were appropriate. The portion of the site falling within the APE as defined during the Phase I should be considered noncontributing to the overall eligibility of the site, which is unknown.
