Abstract

One hundred and fifteen sites were recorded in this survey of the Upper Satilla Basin. The sites are located along the Satilla River in Pierce and. Ware counties, Seventeen Mile Creek, Hog Creek, Hurricane Creek, Big Satilla Creed, and along smaller feeder streams in the basin. Sites were found mainly in areas prepared for reforestation and in cultivated fields. Areas with higher site potential (e.g. sand hills, pebbly sand ridges, and hammocks along watercourses) were given more attention. Data on several sites was taken fran An Archaeological Survey of the Ocsnulgee Big Bend Region (Snow 1977). Walkover surface collections were made at each site, usually on more than one visit. These surface collections are the basis for the assumptions and inferences in this paper.
