Abstract

Site 9 DOT 13 represents a low density ceramic/lithic scatter dating to the Woodland Period. The site is located on the first terrace of Spring Creek, 160 feet northeast of State Route 78, 1.8 miles southeast of State Route 17, Burke County, Georgia. This site was identified as part of a Georgia Dept. of Transportation field investigation of a proposed borrow pit location for project BRF-41-1(16)01, Burke County, Georgia. Only the immediate area of the proposed borrow pit was investigated, therefore, the full extent of the artifact scatter was not determined. The proposed borrow pit area covers 1.38 acres in a recently clearcut area, visibility was 75%. 38 chert debitage, 4 chert core fragments, and 4 amethyst glass fragments were collected on the surface; 10 chert debitage and 1 cordmarked grit-tempered body sherd were recovered from 3 shovel tests. Shovel testing revealed a shallow A horizon and the presence of an intact deposit of charcoal and artifacts (including pottery) below this A horizon. The presence of what appears to be intact midden caused this area to be rejected for use as a DOT borrow pit.
