Abstract

Project STP-149-1(29) would widen and reconstruct SR 67 in Bulloch County. The proposed project on SR 67 would begin at a point approximately 0.56 mile south of CR 248/585/Burkhalter Road then continue northwesterly to an end point at the existing five-lane section in Statesboro at Georgia Avenue. Also, the proposed project includes the construction of railroad crossings at SR 73/SR 67 and US 80/SR 26 over the Ogeechee Railway. The existing right-of-way on SR 67, SR 73, and US 80/SR 26 varies from approximately 100 to 200 feet. The additional required right-of-way needed for project implementation on SR 67 would be a maximum of approximately 50 feet. All project construction related to railroad crossing imrovements will be restricted to within the existing right-of-way. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed project description was conducted for the entire length of the project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register archaeological resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
