Archaeological Survey of Project CSNHS-0000-00(535), Grady County

The proposed project would realign SR 112 and CR 315/17`h Ave. at the SR 38/US 84 intersection in the city Cairo, Grady County, Georgia. This would create two separate 90 degree intersections spaced approximately 1200 feet apart. State Route 112 would consist of two 12-ft lanes with 10-ft rural shoulders. CR 315/17`h Ave. would consist of two 12-ft lanes with 8-ft rural shoulders. A 12-ft right turn lane with 6-ft of grassed shoulder and 5-ft sidewalk would be constructed along northbound SR 38/US 84. New right-of-way would vary from 130-ft to 155-ft. An additional 0.05 acre of required right-of-way was added for a cul-de-sac on CR 315117`h Avenue. The total project length is still approximately 0.31 mile. An archeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. By agreement, since no archaeological resources were located within the project's area of potential effect, no signed concurrence form the State Historic Preservation Officer is required. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
