Abstract

This is the second monthly report of the archaeological evidence found during the period of 20 November 1977 to, and including, 16 December 1977. This work is in conjunction with the Waterworks Improvements Project for the city of Darien, Georgia. Work completed during this period included the majority of the city's waterfront area. Progress has been slower than expected due mostly to inclement weather, some equipment failures and the Thanksgiving holiday. No work stoppage problems were encountered between the construction crew and the project archaeologist. Eight sites of archaeological significance and one "archaeologically sensitive area" (as defined in the previous monthly. report) have been located during this reporting period. These are shown on the "Progress of the Waterworks Improvements Project ..." map for this period (Figure 1). Again, Fred Cook's assistance was used in the identification of all prehistoric ceramic types. Mr. Norman Edwards, curator of the Fort King George Museum, provided invaluable information about the archaeological work performed at Fort King George and the history of the surrounding area. William M. Kelso's 1967 work for the Georgia Historical Commission, "Excavations of the Fort King George Historical Site", was used for further information about the historical and archaeological activities on the Darien Lower Bluff. area. Eight archaeologically significant sites and one "archaeologically sensitive area" have been identified during this reporting period. The descriptions and graphic illustrations of-these archaeological sites follows.
