Abstract

A cultural resources survey was conducted on portions of five compartments of National Forest land in Walker, Chattooga, and Gordon Counties, Georgia, prior to timber operations such as thinning, clear cutting, tree removal, and road construction activities. The timber sales are located within the Armuchee Ranger District in Compartments 915, 916, 932, 933, and 943. Compartments 915 and 916 are located south of Villanow along the Pocket Road. Compartments 932 and 933 are located along Taylor Ridge and the Narrows Road west of the community of Subligna. Twelve archeological sites and isolated finds were found in the Furnace Creek (C-916) and Gentry Gap (C-915) survey areas. These include four prehistoric lithic scatters, three historic house sites, three historic artifact scatters, one rock-pile, and one grave. Twelve archeological sites and isolated finds were found in the Narrows (C-932, C-933) survey area which consist of ten prehistoric lithic scatters, one historic artifact scatter, and one site containing both prehistoric and historic components. Within Compartment 943 (Hidden Creek), two sites were found, which includes one prehistoric site and one site containing both prehistoric and historic components. A total of 18 sites and 8 isolated finds were found in these surveys, covering 1,443 acres of National Forest land.
