Abstract

The proposed project is part of the Georgia Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Program, which was established to fund infrastructure projects that enable and encourage children, including those with disabilities, to walk and bicycle to school safely. These projects are designed not only to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety and access in and near school zones, but also to encourage children to adopt healthy and active lifestyles from an early age. The infrastructure improvements included in this proposed project are shown on the attached project location map and consist of: Extending the existing sidewalks on both the east and west sides of SR 135 from their current termination just north of Perkins Street. On the west side of SR 135, sidewalks will be added from, north of Perkins Street south to Carter Avenue, for a distance of approximately 1,550 feet. On the east side of SR 135, sidewalks will be added from north of Perkins Street south to Project Street, for a distance of approximately 2,350 feet. Sidewalks in these areas will be 5 feet in width with wheelchair ramps and curb & gutter to conform to GDOT specifications. Installing crosswalks, wheelchair ramps and signage in all directions at the intersection of SR 135 and Savannah Avenue. Installing 5-foot sidewalks on the south side of Savannah Avenue, from SR 135 to South Vickers Street (approx. 400 feet), and adding wheelchair ramps and crosswalks at the intersection of Savannah Avenue and South Vickers Street. Installing 6-foot sidewalks on the west side of South Vickers Street all the way to the school, (approximately 1,800 feet), and adding a minor crosswalk and wheelchair ramps at the intersection with Boone Street and at Willacoochee Elementary School. Installing 5-foot sidewalks on both the north and south sides of Savannah Avenue from SR 135 to Bostick Street, including wheelchair ramps at the southwest and northwest corners of the intersection. Installing 5- to 6-foot sidewalks on both the north and south sides of Bostick Street from SR 135 east past and including the intersection with Peggy Hill-Delamar Street. Installing 5-foot sidewalks on both the north and south sides of Project Street from SR 135 east past and including the intersection with Merritt Street.
