Abstract

The proposed project is located in Floyd County, Georgia, approximately 9 miles north of the city limits of Rome, Georgia. The project would consist of an installation of a traffic signal and a ninety degree realignment of SR 140/Turkey Mountain Road. Old Summerville Road would be extended to the south to tie into the new SR 140/Turkey Mountain Road alignment. SR 1/US 27/Martha Berry Highway consists of two through-lanes in each direction with a southbound left turn lane. SR 140/Turkey Mountain Road consists of one travel lane in each direction which terminates at the intersection with SR 1/US 27/Martha Berry Highway from the east. The current intersection is unsignalized with a stop sign control on SR 140/Turkey Mountain Road. The proposed improvements would include an installation of a traffic signal at the intersection, a ninety degree realignment of SR 140/Turkey Mountain Road, an extension of Old Summerville Road to tie into the new alignment, pedestrian signals and crosswalks, and bicycle facilities along the mainline in accordance with the Rome and Floyd County Trail Facilities Plan. The existing and proposed speed of SR 1/US 27/Martha Berry Highway is 55 miles per hour (mph). The existing and proposed speed of SR 140/Turkey Mountain Road is 45 mph. The existing right-of-way along SR 1/US 27/Martha Berry Highway, which includes the Old Summerville Road, varies between approximately 175 feet and 250 feet wide. The existing right-of-way of SR 140/Turkey Mountain Road is approximately 80 feet wide. Up to 55 feet of right-of-way would be required on the south side of SR 140/Turkey Creek Road. Permanent easements up to approximately 15 feet in width would be required from both sides of SR 140/Turkey Mountain Road and on the east side of Old Summerville Road. The project limits on SR 1/US 27/Martha Berry Highway would extend approximately 250 feet north and 400 feet south of the intersection. The project limits on SR 140/Turkey Mountain Road would extend approximately 540 feet east of the intersection. The project limits on Old Summerville Road would extend approximately 350 feet north of the realigned intersection. The total project length would be approximately 1,540 feet (0.29 mile).
