Abstract

The proposed project would convert the existing interchange configuration from a partial cloverleaf to a diverging diamond interchange at the existing overpass of Ashford Dunwoody Road at 1-285. Improvements would also be made to Ashford Dunwoody Road to accommodate the design elements that would be required for the interchange. The existing bridge across 1-285 would be maintained in place. The proposed project would consist of 11-foot travel lanes across the Ashford Dunwoody Road/I-285 bridge and would maintain the existing urban shoulders with sidewalks along Ashford Dunwoody Road or replace them in kind. The project limits would be from approximately 200' south of Lake Hearn Drive to Ravinia Parkway. The project would be constructed on variable width right of way, from 90 to 165 feet wide. The eastbound off- and on-ramps from 1-285 would be reconstructed from their existing condition to a standard diamond configuration to accommodate the diverging diamond design. All work on the ramps would be tied in to the existing roadway well before the merge/diverge points with 1-285. No work would take place on the interstate. The proposed ramps would consist of one 16-foot lane with 6-foot paved inside shoulders and 10-foot paved outside shoulders widening to two or more 12-foot lanes at the intersection with Ashford Dunwoody Road. The off-ramps would include left and right turn lanes at the ramp intersections Ashford Dunwoody Road. Minimal right-of-way may be acquired along the along the westbound off- and on-ramps of 1-285 and along parts both sides of Ashford Dunwoody Road to Ravinia Parkway (see Photograph 7).
