Abstract

In May and September, 2008, URS Corporation performed a Phase I archaeological survey for the proposed widening and reconstruction of SR 92 between SR 3/US 41 and Cowan Road in Cobb County, Georgia. During the course of the investigation, one archaeological resource was recorded within the project area. This consisted of a single Savannah River Stemmed projectile point dating to the Late Archaic Period. The isolated find is not considered National Register eligible. In addition to the corridor survey, an attempt was made to relocate previously recorded site 9CO18 in December, 2008 while the water level in Lake Acworth was down. No evidence of the site, which consisted of a Woodland and Mississippian ceramic scatter, was found. Furthermore, Georgia Archaeological Site File (GASF) evidence suggests that 9CO18 lies outside the current project corridor to the west. Therefore, based on the findings of background research and the Phase I survey, it is the opinion of URS that the proposed widening and reconstruction of SR 92/Lake Acworth Drive will not adversely impact significant archaeological resources within the project corridor. No further archaeological investigations are recommended for the proposed project.
