Abstract

The proposed project consists of the reconstruction of the existing interchange at 1-75 and State Route 37 in Adel. The proposed reconstruction would consist of the replacement of the existing bridge over 1-75 and improvements to the existing interchange ramps. Additionally, SR 37 will be widened from approximately 1.0 km (0.62 mi) west of the I-75 interchange to approximately 0.9 km (0.55 mi) east of the interchange for a total project length of approximately 1.9 km (1.18 mi). The existing right-of-way for SR 37 varies from approximately 24.4 to 30.5 m (80 tO 100 ft). The total additional required right-of-way for SR 37 would vary from approximately 6.1 m to 7.5 m (20 to 25 ft) . An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed right-of-way was conducted for the entire project area. An archaeological survey (Level I) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.
