Abstract

The proposed project would install an automated adverse visibility warning system in both directions on 1-75 from MP 34 to MP 36 in Cook County. The automated adverse visibility system includes the installation of visibility sensors, variable message signs, traffic loops, power lines, control modules, and remote sensors. The existing right-of-way along 1-75 is approximately 91.4 m (300 ft.). All construction is limited to the existing right-of-way with the exception of a self-contained remote terminal. The self-contained remote terminal will be placed on the west side of 1-75 at milepoint 34.4 approximately 45.7 meters (150 ft.) from the edge of the existing pavement. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed rights-of-way was conducted for the entire 3.2 km (2 mi.) project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level I) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register archaeological resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
