Abstract

The proposed project would construct a 27.4 m x 9.7 m (90 ft x 32 ft) concrete bridge structure on existing alignment, on S.R. 187 at Suwannoochee Creek overflow in Clinch County. The existing right-of-way is 30.5 m (100 ft) also, an on-site detour will be constructed on the south (downstream) side of the existing bridge. The temporary construction easement is 243.8 m x 18.3 m (800 ft x 60 ft) on the south side. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed project's rights-of-way was conducted for the entire 243.8 m (800 ft) project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register archaeological resources were located witTin the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
