Abstract

This project begins at the northern terminus of Project FR-003-1(30) and continues northeasterly along State Route 8/U'.S. 78 for a distance of 1.6 miles to the intersection of Austell Road. The project is the proposed widening of the existing two-lane facility to a four-lane with median facility to Jefferson Street. At Jefferson Street traffic flow will be divided with eastbound traffic utilizing Jefferson Street and westbound traffic utilizing the two-lane State Route 8/U.S. 78 facility. An archaeological survey (Level I ) was conducted in accordance with 'GDOT Archaeological Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodology approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No significant archaeological resources were located within the proposed project corridor as described in paragraph two above. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
