Abstract

Project STP-054-1(62) in Newton County proposes to reconstruct and realign the intersection of Flat Shoals Road/Steele Road/CR 181, Mill Road/CR 506, and SR 36 in High Point, Georgia. The intersection angles would be improved for safety and right and left turn lanes would be added to facilitate traffic movement. Existing right-of-way varies from 45 to 100 feet, and a maximum of 90 feet of additional right-of-way would be required from all four quadrants for the reconstruction of the intersection. The total length of this proposed project is 0.29 mile on SR 36, 0.18 mile on CR 181 and 0.31 mile on CR 506. An archaeological survey (Level. III) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register resources were located within the project's area of potential effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
