Archaeological Assessment of Project STP-054-1(49), Gwinnett County

Report Number
6445
Year of Publication
1986
Abstract

The proposed project would add a left turn lane southbound on SR 20/Buford Highway at the intersection with SR 324/Hog Mountain Road, widening on the east side. Widening would occur within the existing 80 feet right of way. Additional right of way would be required for miters at the northeast and southeast quadrants of the intersection only. The proposed project length is approximately .260 mile. The project begins 600 feet south of the intersection between SR 20 and SR 324 and ends 756 feet north of the intersection. An archaeological survey consistent with the project description was conducted for the entire length of the project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level I) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register archaeological resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
