Abstract

Proposed project IM-OOMS(370) in Gwinnett County proposes to make improvements to the 1-85 and SR 317 interchange. The 1-85 ramp improvements would begin approximately 2274 feet south, of SR 317 and end at a point approximately 2477 feet north of SR 317. Improvements on SR 317 would begin 377 feet south of 1-85 and end 344 feet north of 1-85. The exit ramps would be reconstructed and widened to accommodate four exit lanes and the entrance ramps would be widened to accommodate two lanes. All work would be completed within existing right-of-way and no additional right-of-way or easements are required. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
