Archaeological Assessment of Project STP-2879(2), Forsyth County

The proposed project would improve the existing intersection of State Route 306 and County Road 201 by widening the approaches to the intersection for a total distance of approximately 0.7 km (0.45 mi). The existing right-of-way for State Route 306 is approximately 24.4 m (80 ft). Approximately 3.048 m (10 ft) of additional right-of-way would be required for State Route 306. The existing right-of-way for County Road 201 is approximately 18.3 m (60 ft). Approximately 6.096 m (20 ft) of additional right-of-way would be required for County Road 201. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed rights-of-way was conducted for the entire project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No archaeological resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
