Abstract

Project STP-012-1(84) would widen and reconstruct SR 306 on new location in Forsyth County. The SR 306 Extension would begin at SR 20 approximately 213 meters (700 feet) southeast of the SR 20/CR 277 intersection. From that point, the SR 306 Extension would be constructed on new location northeasterly to the SR 306/SR 9 intersection. The proposed project would continue northeasterly on the existing SR 306 location to an end point at SR 400. The existing right-of-way on SR 306 is approximately 30 meters (100 feet), while the additional required right-of-way will be a maximum of approximately 91 meters (300 feet). An archaeological survey consistent with the project description was conducted for the entire 7.8 kilometer (4.9 mile) project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register archaeological resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
