Abstract

TRC was contracted by Tango Whiskey, LLC to conduct a Phase I cultural resources survey of two tracts totaling approximately 40 acres in Thomas Crossroads, Coweta County, Georgia. The study area consists of two tracts of land on opposite sides of State Route 34, on the east side of Thomas Crossroads. One of the goals of the survey was to identify archaeological sites within the project tracts and provide recommendations on their eligibility for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The survey also sought to identify and evaluate all historic structures within the project's Area of Potential Effects (APE). The APE was defined as the project tracts plus any surrounding areas that have a visual connection to proposed developments within the project tracts. The project area is surrounded by woodlands that obstruct lines of sight from surrounding areas and by modem commercial development, which define the APE relatively close to the project area. Records, maps, and reports on file were searched at the Georgia Archaeological Site File in Athens, the TRC library in Atlanta, and the Historic Preservation Division (HPD) in Atlanta. The purpose of this research was to collect information on previously reported archaeological sites and historic architectural resources in or near the project area. One previously recorded archaeological site (9CW114) is located within the project area. Extending into the southwest comer of the project tract north of State Route 34, 9CW114 is a prehistoric lithic and historic artifact scatter that has previously been recommended ineligible for listing in the NRHP. Background research identified no previously recorded historic architectural resources within the project APE. The archaeological and historic architecture surveys were carried out on June 25, 2004. Archaeological survey identified three archaeological resources within the northern project tract: IF-1, IF-2, and previously recorded site 9CW114. Resources IF-1 and IF-2 are prehistoric isolated finds, and 9CW114 is a prehistoric lithic and historic artifact scatter. In addition to these resources, the survey identified within the northern project tract the remains of a demolished, modem structure that was constructed between 1965 and 1971. The site of the non-extant modem building and the three archaeological resources are considered not eligible for listing on the NRHP. No additional cultural resource investigations are recommended for these resources. The architectural survey identified no historic architectural resources within the project's APE. Therefore, no further historic architectural work is recommended.
