Abstract

R.S. Webb & Associates conducted a Phase I cultural resources survey of the proposed Walden Pond development site in Coweta County, Georgia between August 2 and August 15, 2005. Phase II archeological testing of three sites, 9CW212, 9CW217, and 9CW218 was conducted from August 16 to August 22, 2005. This study was conducted to determine if cultural resources eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) would be effected by the proposed undertaking. A total of twelve archeological sites and one isolated find were recorded during the survey. No historic (over 50 years old) structures were identified within the Area of Potential Effects (APE) of the proposed project as a result of architectural survey. Prehistoric occupations from the Early Archaic, Middle Archaic, and Middle Woodland were identified as a result of field survey. Historic period components ranged from the early 19th to the middle 20th centuries. A total of eleven archeological sites and the isolated find are recommended ineligible for the NRHP. No additional cultural resources work is recommended in these areas. Based on the Phase II testing results, the historic period component of Site 9CW217, a late 191h - early 20th century residential site, is recommended eligible for the NRHP. Site 9CW217 is located in an area where ground disturbing or clearing activities will occur. Following agency review of the draft report of this cultural resources study, a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) should be developed to document in detail measures that will be taken to mitigate adverse effects to Site 9CW217.
