Abstract

In June 2005, R.S. Webb & Associates conducted a Phase I cultural resources survey of the proposed 110 acre (ac) Canton Marketplace development tract Cherokee County, Georgia. An additional 36 ac adjacent to the project tract were added and surveyed in January 2006. The work was conducted under contract with The Law Office of W. M. Thomas Craig for The Sembler Company. The purpose of the study was to locate and identify cultural resources within the proposed project area and assess cultural resource significance based on National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria (36 CFR Part 60.4). The survey included an update of the literature/records search and an intensive field survey of the 36 ac project area. A review of pertinent NRHP files indicated that no NRHP listed or eligible properties are located nor adjacent to the project area. The closest previously recorded archeological sites are those located during the survey of the original 110 ac tract (9CK 1202-1208). All of these archeological resources were found in disturbed contexts and were considered ineligible for the NRHP. Two archeological sites were recorded during the survey. Site 9CK1205, recorded during the original survey, was found to extend into the additional project area, and has an unknown prehistoric occupation. Site 9CK1217, a late 19th -early 20th century historic artifact scatter was also located. Both of these resources have been disturbed by logging and erosion, and are considered ineligible for the NRHP. Based on the literature research and field survey, the proposed Canton Marketplace Development Site will have no effect on significant cultural resources within the additional 36 ac. No further cultural resources work is recommended for the proposed additional 36 ac Canton Marketplace development.
