Abstract

Brockington and Associates, Inc., conducted and archaeological transmission line survey for Jordan, Jones and Goulding, Inc. on 8-9 January 2002 along Holcomb Bridge and Nesbit Ferry Road in Gwinnett/Fulton counties. Background research and field survey were conducted to: (1) provide accurate and reliable location of archaeological sites in the project area; (2) provide an evaluation of National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility for all identified archaeological resources; (3) provide recommendations for mitigation if avoidance is not possible. This survey was carried out to comply with cultural resource requirements of Section 106 of the 1966 National Historic Preservation Act (1992, as amended), and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA 1969). Background research, using a current copy of the Georgia Archaeological Site File Database, revealed ten previously recorded archaeological sites within or near the project area of impact. The archaeological field survey consisted of pedestrian inspection of the entire project area. Visual surface inspection and shovel testing were conducted within the project boundaries. Shovel tests were dug in 30 meter (1 00 ft) intervals within a single transect traversing the length of the corridor. Visual ground surface inspection was conducted when surface conditions allowed. Brockington and Associates, Inc., found one previously recorded sight (9FU 165) that falls within the area of projected effect (APE) for the proposed Martin's Landing Transmission Line. Assuming that the proposed transmission line will span the river, Site 9FU165 will not be affected. No previously unrecorded sites were discovered within the currently defined project corridor. Archaeological clearance for the Martins Landing Transmission Line Survey is recommended.
