In December 1994, cultural resources survey and evaluation were completed for the proposed 46 acre Heard County combustion turbine site, Georgia. The tract, which is almost entirely clearcut, consist of upland Piedmont acreage. The survey utilized screened shovel testing on a 30 m interval; surface survey was also pursued when feasible. The site testing included the excavation of 10 m interval shovel tests and surface collection. No previously recorded archaeological sites were present in the tract. Likewise, no standing structures were present. The project resulted in the discovery of ten archaeological sites. All ten of these sites reflect extreme disturbance due to modern day logging activities. None of these sites meet the requirements for NRHP eligibility. In addition, it must be noted that a small historic cemetery, Ebenezer Cemetery, was located just beyond the project area boundary. It appears unlikely that this area will be impacted by C.T. construction activity, but state law may require a preservation plan. The proposed combustion turbine tract does not contain significant architectural or archaeological remains. The ten sites discovered are all recommended as ineligible for the NRHP. Cultural resources clearance to construct is recommended, and no further work is warranted, excepting possible cemetery delineation and preservation planning.
