Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project F-178-1{25), Paulding County, has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the project corridor. Project F-178-1{25), Paulding County begins just west of Willow Springs Road (County Road 94) and extends in an easterly direction along U.S. 278 for an approximate length of 5 miles to the Dallas Bypass, just east of Pumpkinvine Creek. The existing horizontal alignment will be improved on the south side of U.S. 278. A rural 4-lane typical section is being proposed with two lanes in each d1rection with a 44 foot depressed grassed median. Connectors will be constructed to tie the existing U.S. 278 to the realigned proposed four (4) lane roadway. Cross roads will be realigned where needed to get a safe approach to the proposed roadway. A minimum 300 foot required right-of-way is proposed. An archaeological survey (Level III) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT Archaeological Survey Guidelines" de vel oped by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodology approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No significant archaeological resources were located within the proposed project corridor as described in paragraph two above. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
