Abstract

The proposed project would consist of the addition of two eastbound passing lanes, one westbound passing lane, and one center turn lane between Barnesville and Forsyth along US 41 /SR 18 in Lamar and Monroe Counties. These are divided into four sites. The proposed typical section of the passing lanes would consist of three 12-foot travel lanes with 2-foot paved shoulders and 8-foot grassed shoulders. The proposed typical section of the center turn lane would consist of two 12-foot travel lanes separated by a 13.7-foot center turn lane with curb and gutter. The proposed right-of-way would be approximately 1 00 feet on either side of US 41 /SR 18. Changes to the project since 2007 include the addition of required right-of-way (ROW), fence easements, easements for the construction of slopes, driveway easements, and sediment basins. An archeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.
