Abstract

The proposed project would replace the bridge and approaches over Salacoa Creek on Knight Bottom Road, CR 233, in Gordon County. The proposed project originally began 650 feet south of Salacoa Creek and ended approximately 650 feet north of the creek. The project has been lengthened to the north 1200 feet. The required right-of-way will vary 100 feet and 150 feet. On the northern end of the project, on the east side of CR 233, a large area of additional right-of-way will be required. This area is 200 feet by 200 feet. The additional required right-of-way has been surveyed for archaeological resources. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or potentially eligible National Register archaeological resources were located within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect as described in paragraph two above. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.".
