Abstract

Project BHN-065-2 (15) would replace the structurally deficient bridge at Pine Log Creek on SR 53 in Gordon County. The proposed project would begin approximately 115 meters (377 feet) west and end approximately 110 meters (360 feet) east of the existing bridge structure. The existing right-of-way on SR 53 is approximately 45.7 meters (150 feet). An additional 23 meters of temporary easement will be utilized on the south side of SR 53 for the construction of a temporary run-around traffic detour. The temporary run-around traffic detour will be removed after project construction is completed. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed rights-of-way was conducted for the entire 225 meter (737 foot) project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or potentially eligible National Register archaeological resources were located within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect as described in paragraph two above. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.".
