Abstract

Project STP-0003-00(623) would consist of replacing drainage lines along SR 49 in Fort Valley, Georgia. The original survey for this project was conducted by Teresa Lotti in November 2004 (HP031205-00 1 ). Since that time the project has been changed to include pennanent easement along SR 49 at its intersections with College Street, Central Avenue, E. Church Street, Persons Street, Fountain Street, and US 341 /SR 96. This additional easement has also increased the length of the entire project from .72 mile to 1.50 miles. The easement varies in size with a maximum of 40 feet. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed project description was conducted along the entire length of the project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level Il) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register archaeological resources were located within the project 's area of potential environmental effect. 1t is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
