Abstract

This report summarizes the results of a large-scaled archeological excavation at the Mill Creek Site in Americus, Georgia. The project was funded by the City of Americus in connection with the construction of a wastewater treatment facility in the southwest portion of the city. Following State and Federal regulations regarding the protection of significant archeological sites, the City commissioned an archeological survey of the 52-acre tract of land on which the facility was to be constructed. This survey discovered two archeological sites, one of which, the Mill Creek Site, was assessed to be a significant site, one likely to provide important information on the prehistory and early history of the Americus/Sumter County area. However, the site would be destroyed by the construction of the facility.
