This report describes the results of a cultural resources survey for a proposed sewer line along the Etowah River located just east of Rome, Georgia. This Phase I archaeological survey was conducted from March 20 through 22, 1991, by personnel from Garrow & Associates, Inc. The literature search indicated that the project vicinity was the focus of considerable activity in both the prehistoric and historic periods. The proposed right-of-way, as presented, crosses a known site (9FIAS), and an abandoned Civil War era railroad line. Testing consisted of pedestrian survey and excavation of auger and shovel tests. These methods indicate that a large proportion of the proposed right-of-way contains cultural material. In addition to the known site, four additional sites were located in the course of this survey. Each of these sites appears to possess reasonably intact cultural strata and are potentially eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. Therefore, Phase IT testing has been recommended for the five sites within the proposed sewer line right-of-way.
