Archaeological Assessment of Project STP-046-2 (17) (18), Greene County, Reevaluation

Report Number

Year of Publication

Abstract

The proposed project originally consisted of the widening and reconstruction of SR 12/US 278 in the city of Greensboro. The project would begin at the intersection of SR 12/US 278 and Walnut Street and end at a point just east of CR 150. The existing right-of-way was approximately 30.5 m (100 ft). Minor required right-of-way would be necessary at various locations. An archaeological survey consistent with the project description was conducted along the entire project corridor by Bob Entorf in 1989 and 1990. Currently, the proposed project would have the same termini and existing right-of-way. Some required right-of-way and construction easements would be necessary for both units. The concept of Unit 18 was revised to include curb and gutter throughout. An archaeological survey consistent with the current project description was conducted along the entire project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register archaeological resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
