Abstract

Proposed project BRF-1267(10) in Greene County proposes to replace the narrow, structurally deficient bridge on State Route 15 over Harris Creek approximately 9.7 miles northwest of Greensboro, Georgia. The proposed construction would replace the existing structure with a triple barrel 19 ft. X 9 ft. concrete bridge culvert and provide 10 foot rural shoulders on the bridge approaches. An on-site detour on the west side of SR 15 would be utilized to maintain traffic during construction. Additional required right- of-way for this project varies from 0 to 75 feet, with the largest amounts occurring at the on-site detour. The total project length is 0.70 miles (3700 feet). An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
