This report discusses the methods and results of archaeological investigations conducted at the Robert Toombs Historic Site in the City of Washington, Georgia (Figure 1).

The intent of this paper is to focus on the spatial associations and distribution of aggregate village sites. The research area is limited to those barrier islands located between the Savannah River in Georgia, and the Nassau River in northeast Florida (Figure 1).

Charles R. Farnham was attached to the U.S.S. Braziliera as Signal Quartermaster. The Braziliera was serving blockading duty in St. Andrews Sound on November 21, 1863 when Farnham drowned when the dinghy he was aboard was swamped while enroute to Jekyll Island.

No archaeological evidence was encountered, construction was in progress on this project and consisted of tearing out one side of the two-lane road (Ga. 74), laying a pipeline underneath and resurfacing the road. The project area is commercial-residential and is crossed by Rocky Creek.

This report covers the data recovery phase for the mitigation of impact of Georgia Department of Transportation Project #BRZLB-0015(2). That project, a road straightening and bridge replacement, was to adversely impact the Site.
