Abstract

This project involves the replacement of a structurally insufficient bridge (Bridge 119-5006-0) carrying CR 46 (Casey Road) over Unawatti Creek in Franklin County, Georgia (Attachment 1 ). The existing bridge, built in 1963, is located five miles west of Canon, Georgia. This project is part of GDOT's Low Impact Bridge Program (LIBP). Designs for the new bridge were not yet available at the time of the archaeological survey. The existing right-of-way (ROW) measures 18 meters (60ft.) from the centerline. The bridge is 39.3 meters (128.9 ft.) in length. No temporary roadways or bridges were proposed for this project.

The APE for this project includes the footprint in which construction will take place. The guidelines in the LIBP Manual state that for projects included in the program, the APE is to extend 91 meters (300ft.) from each end of the existing bridge along the roadway, resulting in a total APE length of 221 .3 meters (728.9 ft.). The width of the APE is limited to the existing right of way, which is 18 meters. The requirement for survey of an Extended Survey Corridor (ESC) is waived as part of the LIBP.

No previous surveys were conducted within one kilometer (0 .6 mi.) of the APE. No previous sites were recorded within one kilometer (0.6 mi.) of the APE. A local landowner reported that the bridge was built on an "old Indian mound" and that a campsite was located in a field adjacent to the bridge (Georgia Department of Transportation 2016b). While the northwestern portion of the APE is present within this field, most of the field containing this reported site is situated outside of the APE. (Attachment 3). A review of the Georgia Archaeological Site File (GASF) and historic quad maps of the area surrounding the APE showed no indication of any precontact sites in or near the APE. No evidence of archaeological remains was found within any area of the APE, including the portion within the field.
